Havruta Study: The value of learning in pairs

  • Retreat House Spirituality Center 110 Mimosa Drive Richardson, TX, 75080 United States (map)

What is Havruta?

Havruta - the Aramaic word for “friendship,” “companionship,” or “fellowship,” is a generative learning process through pairs.

Join us this March, as we cultivate the practice of havruta, deeply listening to one another, sharing texts, exploring different perspectives, and reflecting upon what we learn in pairs.

If you already enjoy the spiritual practice(s) of Lectio Divina, Sacred Reading, or the Examen, you will be blessed by learning the spiritual practice of Havruta. I experienced this practice several years ago with spiritual friends. It is such a gift for Retreat House to be able to offer this ancient practice for our community. Thank you, Karen Hoffman, for saying yes! I so look forward to learning from you and sharing Holy Ground.

More on Havruta…

Over four sessions, each building on the previous one, we will learn principles and practices that have enriched learning environments for centuries. Dating back to 10-220 CE, this approach to learning was urged through the rabbis, saying “Make for yourself a teacher, and acquire of yourself a friend.”

Today, schools around the world, including the U.S. and  some countries in Asia, are using this approach to self-directed learning and paired exploration as early as elementary-aged.

We will use creative approaches, including poetry, text, and other resources as we develop our own approaches to learning “b’chavruta” - in partnership. No prior experience is necessary. Open to all.

This offering will be taught by Mindful Living Guide Karen Hoffman.
