I find the light by going into the darkness and waiting: A reflection for the season

By Lila Morisee

As we continue to explore the themes of light and connection this season, thank you to our friend and partner Lila Morisee for offering some Brave vulnerability in her response to this week’s reflection question. Brave Vulnerablity is a core value at Retreat House, where individuals are given space to explore their sacred stories through the lens of compassion and truth.

Reflection questions:

Where do you find the light of this season? How does the light come to you in the darkness or does it find you, or both? Does this season/time of year bring connection or disconnection? How do you connect to the light/to yourself, to God, to others?

Reflection:

Often times I find the light by going into the darkness and waiting, just waiting, sometimes suffering through the darker emotions of fear, anger, greed, jealousy and on and on.  And all the time I like to stay in dialogue with God, telling the truth, my truth at least, and sure enough after I pour my mind and heart out, things shift.  God reassures me I can go on--I'm still loveable in my frailness.  My humanity just connects me with my need for community.

Other times out in nature I'm struck with deep satisfying joy at simply being alive and able to walk my dogs in the sun, in the changing seasons, just greeting fellow walkers.  I like being back in a church setting where I feel the love and sense of belonging at simple and profound moments.  I like coming home to my cozy home and practicing sabbath in the quiet and calm of the interiors, watching the light rifting through in the afternoon sun.

Finally, I love sharing unexpected connections with friends and family.  I love being at Retreat House and the blessings I encounter there--the peace I find when I slow down, breathe, listen and share.
