Grandma in the Moon

By Suzanne Guinn

My evenings outside my house

to run errands or take walks

have invited an encounter with

the “Grandma in the Moon”

She is often orange in the early evening

as sun is setting and casting a

hue that is is refleting

and is larger than life it seems

I’m reminded of walks with my Grandma Ella

in the summer when she would visit

and how she’d talk of the “Man in the Moon”

whose face you could clearly see

if you looked closely

She shared a recognition of

God revealed in creation

and how the mystery of God could be seen

in God’s many faces

one of which was the moon

She never seemed to fear

the darkness of a night sky

because it contained the moon and stars

which God put in their places

to brighten the world

and they were friendly faces

Just waiting to be explored

The Psalms tell us

“In God there is no darkness at all

the night is as bright as the day”

There is no place I can wander

that is outside God’s loving

caring

watchful

and protective eyes

So I don’t need to fear

the night either

or the darkness that sometimes

clouds my soul

because God sees me

and loves me

like a “Grandma in the Moon”

and will hold me and rock me

and bring comfort and peace

to my heart
